Backyard Space Requirements for Inflatable Rentals
One of the most common questions parents ask when planning a party is whether a bounce house will actually fit in their backyard. The answer depends on more than just the size of the inflatable itself. You must also account for safety space around the unit, the blower equipment, and the path needed for the installation crew.
A helpful rule used by many rental companies is to add roughly 5 to 10 extra feet to the inflatable's listed dimensions in both directions. This additional space ensures there is room for anchoring, safe entry and exit, and the blower that keeps the inflatable inflated.
Understanding the True Size of a Bounce House Setup
Many people assume that if a bounce house is listed as 13 feet by 13 feet, they only need that much yard space. In reality, the installation area must be larger.
The inflatable itself is only part of the total setup footprint. The blower, anchor points, and safety buffer all require additional room.
Typical Backyard Space Requirements
Below are common space estimates used for backyard inflatable setups.
- 13' x 13' bounce house → requires about 17' x 17' to 20' x 20' clear area.
- 15' x 15' bounce house → requires about 20' x 20' to 25' x 25' clear area.
- Large combo units → may require even larger setup zones.
These estimates help ensure enough space for safety buffers and equipment placement.
Space Needed for the Blower
The blower is the fan that keeps the inflatable filled with air. It sits behind the bounce house and must remain unobstructed during operation.
- Leave roughly 5 to 10 feet of extra space behind the inflatable.
- Keep the blower intake clear of leaves and debris.
- Do not block the blower with furniture or decorations.
Without proper airflow, the bounce house may lose pressure or deflate.
Delivery Path Requirements
Before the inflatable can be set up, the installation crew must be able to move the equipment from the truck to the setup area.
- A clear path at least 3 to 4 feet wide is usually required.
- Residential gates should typically be at least 36 inches wide.
- The path should be free of obstacles, tight turns, or steep steps.
If the crew cannot reach the setup area safely, installation may not be possible.
Vertical Clearance Requirements
Bounce houses are tall structures when fully inflated. Many standard units reach heights of around 15 feet or more.
- Allow at least 15 to 20 feet of overhead clearance.
- Avoid low tree branches.
- Stay far away from power lines.
Overhead obstacles can damage the inflatable or create safety risks.
The Simple Backyard Test
If you want a quick way to check if your yard will work, try this simple test:
- Measure the width and length of your available space.
- Add at least 5 to 10 extra feet to the bounce house size.
- Check for trees, fences, and power lines.
- Make sure the delivery crew can access the area.
If all these conditions are met, your backyard will likely work for a bounce house setup.
